Eine andere Frage ist, welche Nationen sind die sportlichsten, gemessen an olympischen Medaillen? Die Antwort ist hier.
Beispiel: Nation A hat 10 Mio Einwohner und erreichte 10 Medaillen. Nation B hat 1 Mio Einwohner und erreichte 5 Medaillen. Offenbar ist Nation B 5 mal "sportlicher" als Nation A, denn Nation A hat eine Medaille je 1 Mio Einwohner, Nation aber 5 je Mio. Einwohner. Der Ansatz ist also, die erreichten Medaillen auf die Einwohnerzahl zu beziehen.

Example: Nation A achieves 10 medals with a population of 10 Mio people. Nation B achieves 5 medals with a population of 1 Mio. Obviously Nation B is more "sportive" as Nation A, exactly 5 times more. Nation A only achieves 1 medal per 1 Mio people but B achieves 5 medals per 1 Mio. The approach of this analysis is to calculate medals per population which makes nations completely comparable.

Method: This is the number of population per one medal. So Bahama needs only 194.000 people to achieve 1 medal, but Bahrain needs already 689,000 people for the same. And the USA needs more than 321,000 people for just one medal. The official rank reflects only that the country has lots of people. This makes the medal list truly comparable. Countries with one medal only are excluded.

Damit ist der Effekt herausgerechnet, dass bevölkerungsreiche Länder eben automatisch an der Spitze der Liste stehen. Zum Beispiel hat China nur den Platz 58. Der gute Listenplatz auf dem üblichen Medaillenspiegel spiegelt nur wieder, dass China so viele Menschen hat.
